Vocabulary Development

Presented by Ellen Engstrom, M.A., Groves Academy Director of Teacher Training

Vocabulary instruction is important because word knowledge is necessary to access background knowledge, express ideas and communicate them to others, and learn new concepts. Students’ word knowledge is linked strongly to general academic success. This workshop will provide scientifically based vocabulary instruction strategies that will engage students and help teachers base their instruction on best practice.

Vocabulary instruction is important because word knowledge is necessary to access background knowledge, express ideas and communicate them to others, and learn new concepts. Students’ word knowledge is linked strongly to general academic success. Students who have large vocabularies can understand new concepts more quickly than students with limited vocabularies. Because of the vast number of words students must learn while they are in school, direct instruction in vocabulary is essential. This workshop will provide scientifically based vocabulary instruction strategies that will engage students and help teachers base their instruction on best practice.
