“Understanding How the Science of Reading Affects Literacy Instruction”
Presented by Ellen Engstrom
This is a virtual event
Thursday, May 2 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

The Science of Reading consists of a body of extensive multidisciplinary research on reading and writing. Because of it, we know a great deal about how children become readers and what prevents them from developing basic reading skills. The same research has provided us with information that guides effective reading instruction as well as effective intervention for those students who do not learn to read easily. This presentation aims to foster a clear understanding of how the Science of Reading informs literacy instruction.
This presentation will address:
1. What science tells us about how children learn to read
2. What parents can do to support their children’s literacy development
3. The causes of dyslexia and how instruction can remediate it
4. How parents can support a child with dyslexia
