In the year 2000, Groves Academy embarked upon an important initiative to ensure that children with learning disabilities continue to be well served, and launched a $9 million capital campaign called "Think...of the Possibilities!"
Meeting a Need
Since 1972, Groves has served as a community resource for children and families through programs such as our full-day school for grades 1-12, diagnostic services, summer school, after school tutoring, and Saturday social skills groups. While Groves has been able to support children and adults with learning disabilities for 32 years, there continues to be an unmet need in the metro area as well as a huge void in the Upper Midwest for programs that Groves is uniquely qualified to fill.
National studies show that at least 5% of all students have some form of a learning disability. Public and private school personnel are not adequately funded or trained to recognize or diagnose learning disabilities, nor are they fully prepared to educate children with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders. In many schools, a student must be two years behind his/her grade level in reading, writing, or math to meet the schools guidelines for special services. Many students "fall between the cracks" and don't qualify for services until it is too late. The issue of educating children with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders is a community issue cutting across all social and economic boundaries.
During much of Groves Academy's 30-year history, the school operated in a 1950's building originally built as an elementary school. High school students met in classrooms designed for young children; seventh and eighth graders were grouped with high school or elementary school students. Space was very limited for specialized services such as diagnostic testing and counseling. Many all-school or community events had to be held off-site.
Recognizing the tremendous need and demand for services, the Board of Trustees for Groves Academy approved the decision to embark upon a $9 million campaign called "Think of the Possibilities!" This campaign encompasses all areas of the school including facility enhancement and expansion, program enrichment, and community outreach. Our goal is to improve the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of these much needed services.
A dedicated team of volunteers has been charged with the responsibility for the campaign and we are thrilled to have Jud Dayton, an alumni parent and leader in the community, as our campaign chair.
Over the years, Groves Academy has been fortunate to successfully partner with individuals, foundations and corporations to fill a gap in services for students with learning disabilities. We must now expand these partnerships in order to reach the thousands of families whose needs for services are unmet.
We look at each child and "think of the possibilities." We help children and families with learning and attention disabilities venture eagerly and confidently to the larger world. Please join us in celebrating the future of Groves Academy and our entire community. Together - the possibilities are endless! |
