Perspectives from students
At my old school the teachers were nice but they couldn't give me any help with my work because there were too many kids in my class. I had to do my work by myself and it was too hard for me. My teachers just gave me easier work instead of teaching me how to do the harder work. This really embarrassed me because I didn't want people to think I was dumb or lazy!
Now I'm a seventh grader in my second year at Groves. Groves lets me work at my level rather than giving me work that is too easy or too hard. The teachers are friendly and always willing to help me when I need it. The kids are really nice, too. I have improved in math, writing, and reading, and my favorite classes are science, phy. ed., and reading. I really love to read! I feel like I belong at this school.
This is the place where I can make friends, get help, and do harder work. I look forward to going to another school sometime and I know I will be successful because I got the help that Groves gave me.

Before Groves I had lost my will to want to learn. The teachers here have shown me a strength that really was always there, yet is now shining through. Groves Academy is a wonderful school and I hope to come back and bring my grand kids someday and tell them all about my experiences here at Groves.

I started at Groves in fourth grade. In less than three years at Groves, I have learned to again like going to school. Groves has helped me learn by :
- Teaching me how I learn. For instance, it is easier for me to learn through hearing than seeing. Groves teachers adapt their teaching methods towards me.
- Not rushing me. At Groves I do not learn new stuff until I have shown I know the current topics. In my old school, the class would move on to a new topic even though I was not ready.
- Strengthening my social skills. Now it is much easier for me to make friendships with people.

I like Groves because I learned to read here. I like to read now. It's my favorite subject.

I used to wonder if I would ever be able to get back on track. I don't even think I had a track to help guide me, at least not until going to Groves. Struggling through school with ADD is so frustrating that it's hard to explain, but I'll give it a shot. Just imagine being blindfolded and set in the middle of a football field. Your goal is to find a gumball, a gumball that holds all your hopes and dreams, basically your life. Now you can just imagine the frustration! I would like to thank Groves for filling that field full of gumballs for me.

Perspectives from Parents
Groves gave us a clear idea of what's going on with our child, and a path.

It has been a little over ten years since our daughter attended Groves, but without your help in both education and coping skills she would not be at the point she is today. This spring she will be graduating from college with honors. She has become a confident and well-spoken young lady. What is behind her success is due in large part to the well-rounded curriculum at Groves.

In the past, our daughter grieved the end of summer with such passion that it became a huge part of every new school year. The start of this school year [when she was returning for her second year at Groves] was filled with anticipation and excitement. As we shopped for our new school supplies, she commented on feeling "really ready" to go back to school. There really are no words for the level of gratitude we feel for the changes you all have helped our daughter achieveäboth academically and emotionally.

My experience at Groves has been that the education conforms to the child more than the child conforms to the education.

The Groves community was the first step in helping our son change his destiny. Before Groves, we believed that we would be lucky to see him graduate from high school. We wondered if he would ever read and had concluded that rudimentary arithmetic skills were perhaps beyond his grasp. By third grade he had fallen seriously behind in all skill areas. Currently, he is near the top of his [college] class and brimming with the confidence born of knowing that he can and will succeed. Thank you! Thank you!

Groves made a dramatic difference in our lives. Our daughter not only gained confidence, but also gained a realization that she was smart. It just took a good school to bring out what was lost way down inside her. She is now determined to continue a teaching degree in Special Ed. She wants to help children like herself. She realizes that she can make a difference in a child's life, just like you have.

When our son first arrived at Groves he was close to giving up and at risk for all kinds of academic and social problems. At Groves he grew to like learning again because of the endless patience and caring of his teachers. They cared enough to stick with him during his frustrations and impatience, find out what the real problem was and show him how to overcome it. He was able to succeed and preserve his self-esteem. I will always be grateful to Groves Academy for being there when we needed help and hope.

Thank you for putting a sparkle and twinkle in my son's eyes. He comes home from school just bubbling with excitement about what he is learning.

My daughter's years at Groves were a turning point, a time when she learned to understand her disabilities and to meet her challenges head on. Because of the caring, devoted teachers she spent time with every day, she learned to accept and love herself. She has developed problem-solving skills, compensatory strategies, initiative, persistence and stamina that will last her a lifetime. She is about to finish her senior year of [her new] high school. She advocates for herself and interacts with her teachers in a very mature way. She learned to trust teachers and believe in herself at Groves.
