Groves Academy is pleased to announce that we are now a Wilson Language Training™ partner, and we will be offering training in Wilson Language programs. The mission of Wilson Language Training is to provide high quality professional development and support for educators so that they have the skills and tools to help their students become fluent, independent readers. Wilson Language programs are aligned with the most current scientific reading research, and the evidence of their effectiveness is well documented in outcome studies.

The Wilson Reading System® (WRS) is the flagship program of Wilson Language Training. Based on Orton-Gillingham principles for reading and spelling, the WRS is a highly structured multisensory language program that presents English language concepts in a cumulative and developmental manner. The Wilson Reading System® is successful with students who have a language-based learning disability, as well as with students who are reading below grade level because they have word level deficits. The WRS has been implemented in large school districts (New York City), as well as in smaller public and private schools.

Groves will offer certification for Level I and Level II of the WRS. Certification requirements for Level I are:
·         A WRS Introductory workshop as a prerequisite
·         A self-paced online course
·         A 60+ lesson practicum teaching one student the WRS curriculum
·         Five observations throughout the practicum by a Wilson Language trainer.

Level I certification is priced for individuals and schools.

2012 Schedule

Groves Academy has partnered with Wilson Language Training® to offer Level I and II Wilson Reading System® (WRS) certification training.

The WRS is a highly structured multisensory language program based on Orton-Gillingham principles for teaching reading and spelling. WRS curriculum presents English language concepts in a cumulative and developmental manner. Continuous assessment and progress monitoring allow teachers to use diagnostic techniques to meet the needs of their students.

WRS® Level 1 Certification Program
Groves offers Wilson Level I certification on an open enrollment basis and through a summer intensive program. Educators who participate in Level I certification learn how to use multisensory teaching strategies, the structure of the English language, how to plan and implement a Wilson lesson based on the needs of each student, and how to teach the WRS with fidelity so that students can make sustainable progress in reading and spelling. WRS Level I certification provides teachers with in-depth knowledge of the speech sound system and the ways in which written language represents spoken English. Graduate credits are available.

WRS® Level 1 Open Enrollment Option
Participants in Level 1 certification have the following expectations: complete the prerequisite Introductory and Applied Methods workshop within the previous five years; complete a self-paced online course; complete a 1:1 practicum with a Wilson-approved student for a minimum of 60 lessons; achieve Step 4.2 with the student; complete five lesson observations by a Wilson trainer; write lesson plans; demonstrate mastery of lesson plan procedures; complete post-testing and submit student reports.
Dates: Flexible start dates. Participants have 12 months to complete the program.
Times: Self-paced
Fee: $1,375 (plus travel expenses if applicable for offsite training or observations)

WRS® Level 1 Summer Intensive Option
Another option for WRS Level I certification is to complete the requirements, except for the online course, during a summer intensive training.  Participants are required to fulfill the expectations listed above and will have 12 months to complete the online course.
Dates: July 2 – August 3 (independent work July 3 – 5)
Times: Monday through Thursday 9:00am – 1:30pm; Friday 9:00am -- 12:00pm
