Groves Outreach
is the community outreach arm of Groves Academy, providing LD resources and services to students, families and educators. Students who don’t attend Groves Academy full-time can still benefit from the expertise of Groves teachers and staff. Services for students include diagnostic assessments, individual tutoring, summer school, and post-secondary planning support. Groves Outreach also supports parents and professionals who wish to deepen their understanding of learning disabilities. Workshops and conferences, teacher training, and resource materials provide teachers, parents, clinicians and community leaders with essential information about proven, research-based LD instruction.

Groves is committed to developing and expanding outreach services in conjunction with community partners and local public and private schools. We believe it is imperative to stay current and connected in order to continue to bring best practices to students in the classroom.

Groves is fortunate to have the McKnight Foundation, the Afremov Family Foundation, RBC Dain Rauscher, the General Mills Foundation, the June Stern Family Foundation, the Wells Fargo Foundation and the Kopp Family Foundation support our community work through generous grants.

Minnesota Reading Reform: A State in Crisis
Up to 40% of 3rd grade students cannot read fluently...
Only 10% of these students can be classified as learning disabled…
What is being done about the problem?

John Alexander, Groves Head of School, has been instrumental in recent reading legislation passed in the state of Minnesota. View a compelling video about the efforts of Minnesota reading advocates and lawmakers to change the way reading is taught in our state: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEQe6g6zFHY. (It is important to note that this video was independently produced and was not funded by Groves Academy.)

The result of these efforts was the passing of the literacy bill in both the House and the Senate, and the Governor’s signing the bill into law. In short, the bill requires that scientifically-based reading instruction is used in the classroom and that new teaching candidates pass an assessment that reflects scientifically-based reading instruction. A new focus for Groves Outreach is to help school districts implement scientifically-based reading instruction for all students by ensuring that all teachers be given the professional development required to ensure that our children become proficient readers. This is a big task but there is growing momentum within the community for addressing the issue.
