Groves workshops and events are free and open to the public unless indicated otherwise.  Please join us! Continuing education credits (CEUs) are provided at Groves workshops. Throughout the year, more workshops will be added; please check back to find the newest updates to our schedule.

Kansas Strategies: The Paragraph Writing Strategy

This summer, Groves Academy is proud to offer a two-day Kansas Learning Strategies workshop for teachers and special education instructors. Certified Kansas Strategies trainer, Margie Motzel, will present on the Paragraph Writing Strategy. The workshop will consist of lecture, practical application and interactive lesson planning.
 
The workshop will be held at Groves Academy in Saint Louis Park on Monday, August 23 and Tuesday, August 24. To view the information and registration form, which has more detailed information regarding the workshop, please follow this link. Register early, as space is limited. 

 

Groves Academy Summer Institute 2010

For the second year, the Landmark College Institute for Research and Training will offer a series of workshops in collaboration with Groves Academy in St. Louis Park, MN. A registration form can be found to the right in the Workshops Documents list or by visiting the Landmark website.  

Workshop topics are:

Wilson Introductory Workshop/Applied Methods

This Wilson Introductory Workshop is a 15-hour workshop that provides the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin implementing the Wilson Reading System (WRS). This 3-day workshop presents multisensory structured language principles and techniques of the WRS program. It provides hands-on and practical training to teachers implementing the WRS, and it fulfills the prerequisite for the Level I certification program. Participants may receive 1 graduate credit from Endicott College.

August 16-18 (Mon. - Wed.) 8:30 am to 3 pm

Fee: $525

 

Assistive Technology for Struggling Students

For educators and developers of educational materials, this digitally-connected world opens up endless new ways to explore how to use and effectively design instructional content. This one day workshop will introduce a variety of beneficial assistive technologies, information on how to assess the pedagogy, accessibility and usability of new technology tools, and how to create more accessible and usable learning materials to promote engagement and learning for all students. The goal of this course is to provide educators with technology and design tips and tools

that can promote access and learning to effectively reach students, especially those with LD/ADHD.

Teaching Students with AD/HD and Executive Function Challenges

The workshop explores the theoretical basis for AD/HD and executive function challenges at school and home, providing educators with insights for designing effective interventions that promote academic success. Participants will develop a repertory of strategies for meeting the challenges of time and task management, with a focus on efficient study routines and a coaching approach to student metacognition and self management.

Orton-Gillingham Teacher Training Courses 

Co-sponsored by Orton-Gillingham of Minnesota, Groves Academy and Hamline University, the summer 2010 course will be held between June 18 and July 1.

Classes
Levels 1, 2, and 3 of Orton-Gillingham will be offered this summer.  Participants with no previous Orton-Gillingham training should start with Level 1. Participants who have had OG 1 and 100 hours of practice are eligible to take Level 2. All courses follow the Orton Gillingham Academy (OGA) guidelines for OGA certification. Optional graduate credit is available through Hamline University.

Fee: $750 per course

The OG teacher training courses also provide an opportunity for 2nd – 8th grade students who are having difficulty with reading and/or spelling to receive nine hours of Orton-Gillingham instruction, provided each weekday morning by the teachers who are participating in the teaching training course and practicum. Students receive one hour of instruction per day for nine days.

About Orton-Gilingham

Orton-Gillingham teacher training courses are open to educators, tutors, parents and others who are interested in multisensory language instruction. Each course includes instruction in the Orton-Gillingham approach and a practicum to allow participants to apply what they are learning. The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a phonetic, rule-based, structured and multisensory method for teaching reading, spelling and writing. It is a systematic and cumulative approach involving intensive reinforcement.
