An introduction on how to successfully use reading and writing assistive technology to enhance student's academic success. Erika Kluge Frake M.F.C.S. is the Director of THINK with Success. As an Assistive Technology Specialist and Special Educator, she has several years of experience working with students in grades two through college to enhance their academic success through the use of Assistive Technology (AT) in the areas of reading, writing, note-taking, and executive function.

USA Gap Year Fairs are a national circuit of events designed to provide students, parents, and high school counselors with a broad exposure of Gap Year Programs and the opportunity for face to face conversations with the people who work in the field. For students and parents interested in Gap Year, these fairs are the legitimate source to connect with reputable organizations that focus on education, service and personal growth. USA Gap Year Fairs also feature a speaker who provides an unbiased approach to Gap Year and the variety of offerings. Interested students and parents can learn about the entire Gap Year process; from application to deferring freshman year to reentering college when they return. TEACHER TRAINING: Kansas Strategies: Proficiency in Sentence Writing

The Sentence Writing Strategy program is comprised of two parts: Fundamentals in the Sentence Writing Strategy and Proficiency in the Sentence Writing Strategy. This workshop will cover the Proficiency portion. Fundamentals is not required as a prerequisite. The Proficiency strategy includes methods for recognizing and writing 14 sentence patterns with four types of sentences: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. The program consists of two products: an Instructor's Manual and a Student Lessons Manual. The Instructor's Manual features a systematic sequence of instructional procedures; the Student Lessons Manual features exercises that correspond to instructional procedures.

EVENT: Learning to Read: Bringing Research to the Classroom

This full-day symposium will cover topics most critical to struggling and emerging readers, including exciting developments in reading research and implications for school and home. Our morning speaker, Anthony Pedriana, educator, former school administrator, and author of Leaving Johnny Behind: Overcoming Barriers to Literacy and Reclaiming At-Risk Readers, will take us through the revelations and frustrations he encountered while searching for more effective ways to teach children to read. Dr. Todd Busch of the University of St. Thomas will summarize the National Reading Panel’s evidence-based findings about the essential components of good reading instruction. Afternoon speaker Dr. Maryanne Wolf, who brought the science of reading to the general public with her acclaimed book Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, will share her research on brain imaging and the reading brain, new approaches to reading interventions, and the unique brain organization that some children with dyslexia possess.

As a follow-up to the February 17 event, this workshop will provide an overview of research-proven instructional strategies for developing reading fluency that teachers can use in the classroom and in remedial settings. A fluent reader is one who reads accurately at a reasonable rate of speed and with expression.

In this session, attendees will be given hands-on experience to accomplish the following: defining alternative print and acquiring it for class reading content; how to use Learning Ally and BookShare in the classroom and at home; how to search and download a book from Learning Ally to include for use on a computer, a portable Android device or MP3 player, an iOS devise such as the iPad or iPhone; how to search and download a book from BookShare using tools such as Kurzweil, ROL, iOS device, and Read&Write Gold.

The Wilson Reading System (WRS) is a highly structured multisensory language program based on Orton-Gillingham principles for teaching reading and spelling. The WRS presents English language concepts in a cumulative and developmental manner. This three-day workshop will provide the hands-on, practical training and guidance needed to effectively begin implementing the WRS. Participants may receive one graduate credit at an additional cost. This workshop also serves as a prerequisite to WRS Level I Certification.
