Groves Academy Summer Programs are open to students from any school who are entering 2nd through 12th grades. Parent workshops and teacher training classes are also available during the summer
Summer Programs at Groves are designed to meet the academic and social needs of each student. Instruction is highly personalized. Groves teachers combine their experience and expertise with a caring and supportive approach to teaching
Grades 2-8
The core four-week program, for students entering grades 2-8, will run this year from June 18 – July 13, and will include a morning program and an afternoon program. Students may register for either or both programs. The morning program is designed to help students who need a structured, small-group academic experience, while the afternoon program offers social and enrichment options. Students may also register for before school (7:30 – 9:00 am) and after-school (3:30 – 5:00 pm) activities.
During the morning (9 AM until noon) students are enrolled in small-group reading, writing and math classes taught by Groves Academy teachers. The average class size is six students. Teachers use research-based methods designed for students who have learning disabilities, such as
¶ The Wilson Language Program, a research-based Orton-Gillingham approach to reading and spelling which emphasizes direct, sequential, multi-sensory instruction tailored to the issues and successes of each student.
¶ Kansas Strategies, an approach for instruction in written expression which directly teaches foundational skills in a sequential manner before moving on to more sophisticated written language skills.
¶ Structured, sequential math instruction catered to individual needs and designed to remediate weak areas in computation and conceptualization, provide multi-sensory opportunities to enhance understanding, and solidify and enhance math existing skills.
The afternoon program offers a variety of recreational options between 12:30 and 3:30 PM. Students enrolled in the afternoon program choose from a variety of meaningful, structured and fun activities such as science, art, keyboarding, and outdoor games.
Grades 9-12
The two-week high school program will be offered this year from July 30 – August 10. Topics will include writing, study skills, technology, reading comprehension and math.
Individual Tutoring
Individual tutoring sessions, designed and scheduled to meet the individual needs of each student, are also available during the summer.
Diagnostic Assessments
Summer is also a great time to re-evaluate academic strengths and challenges in preparation for the new school year. Groves offers complete diagnostic testing throughout the year for students of any age from any school.
