2010 Summer Skills - Two Program Options

Practicing Social and Conversation Skills for Teens Ages 13-17

Tuesday Evenings
6:00 to 8:00 PM
July 13 through August 17

The goal of the class is to learn new skills and increase confidence while having fun and forming new friendships.  Teen-friendly dinners and engaging dinner conversation topics will be part of each week’s experience. The lessons will be specific to teens and reflect the real life situations they encounter with peers and family.

Each week a new, identified social skill will be presented and practiced.  Class curriculum is targeted toward students who need the confidence, experience and practice to successfully take part in conversations and social exchanges.  New skills will be practiced repeatedly through a variety of fun activities and games.  Course materials focus on helping students realize the power they have to shape the experiences and events in their lives.  We’ll fuel their curiosity about becoming their best, most effective selves and move them toward awareness of their radiant potential.

Classes will be held at Groves Academy in St. Louis Park, MN.  The program is open to students enrolled at Groves Academy as well as other young adults in the community, and is geared toward high-functioning students who would benefit from improved competence and confidence in everyday social situations.  Classes are kept small to ensure highly personalized instruction.  Classes will have a 5-1 student/teacher ratio with a maximum of 10 students (minimum of 6) per session and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The cost for the 6-week session is $340 which includes dinner and beverages. Participants who register by Tuesday, June 29th will receive a $10.00 discount.

Registration: Registration for the summer 2010 session will close on Tuesday, July 6. Please click HERE for a registration form, or click on the documents list to the right.

Enhancing Social Skills through Theatre Fun

The “Enhancing Social Skills with Theatre Fun” class brings fun, laughter and bonding to the learning environment. This class focuses on the development and enhancement of social skills through theatre games. Drama is a universal form of human expression. In this course full of skill-based exercises and theatre activities students will use comedy, role play and other theatre games in order to understand body language, express emotion, and communicate with confidence. Infusing their creations with expressive voices and gestures, students will improve their leadership and teamwork skills as they connect in fun ways with their classmates. In a non-competitive and affirming atmosphere, students will be able to expand their comfort zones and feel more at ease in social situations. Benefits from this experience include satisfaction, self-confidence, pride in achievement, self-esteem, new friendships and lots of fun. Classes are taught by a U of M theatre graduate and a social skills instructor.

Note: This class is appropriate for high functioning students who want to learn new skills and need the confidence, experience and practice to successfully take part in conversations and social exchanges.  We are committed to making sure that all students have the best possible experience.  Because of this, students who have difficulty controlling and managing behavior that would be distracting or disruptive in a structured learning environment may not be good candidates for this class.
