Saturday Social Skills Classes
The Saturday Social Skills program is specifically designed to give 8 - 10 year old students, with average to above average cognitive ability, the opportunity to directly learn and practice social skills in an affirming and supportive small group environment.
Many students who struggle to form social relationships respond well to direct instruction, role-playing, and structured cooperative activities. This class is targeted toward students who need extra instruction and practice in order to successfully navigate social situations. The program is a good fit for students who experience difficulty with social interactions due to attention disorders, language-based learning disabilities such as dyslexia, non-verbal learning disorders or anxiety disorders.
Some skills will be practiced more than once, through a variety of activities, but new topics will be introduced in each session as well. Because the class size is small, lessons can be tailored to meet individual and class needs. Topics will include:
- Getting to know someone new
- Joining in
- Starting and maintaining conversations
- Respecting personal space and boundaries
- Giving and receiving compliments
- Showing understanding for others’ feelings
- Cooperating and compromising
- Dealing with mistakes
- Being flexible
- Problem solving

Social Skills Class for Teens
Groves Academy will sponsor an extended 10-week session of the social skills class for teens again this spring, starting on March 2, 2010. The Practicing Social and Conversation Skills program is specifically designed to give 13-17 year old students the opportunity to review and practice important social skills in an affirming and supportive small group environment.
The goal of the class is to learn new skills and increase confidence while having fun and forming new friendships. Teen-friendly dinners and engaging dinner conversation topics will be part of each week’s experience. The lessons will be specific to teens and reflect the real life situations they encounter with peers and family.
Each week a new, identified social skill will be presented and practiced. Class curriculum is targeted toward students who need the confidence, experience and practice to successfully take part in conversations and social exchanges. New skills will be practiced repeatedly through a variety of fun activities and games. Added to the spring session will be material aimed at helping students realize the power they have to shape the experiences and events in their lives. We’ll fuel their curiosity about becoming their best, most effective selves and move them toward awareness of their radiant potential.
