College Conference Workshop Series

This year, Groves Academy is proud to present a four-part workshop series about the college experience for students with learning disabilities. Throughout the fall, topics will cover the application and decision-making process of the college search, helping students and families understand the types of services that colleges offer for LD students, as well as which accommodations may benefit each student most. With admissions representatives, college support specialists, and knowledgeable college counselors, these three workshops promise to provide an in-depth look at the college search for LD students.  In the spring, our final workshop will address how to access and use institutions’ support services if college proves to be overwhelming. This series, in tandem with the College and Post-Secondary Opportunities Fair, will introduce LD students and their families to the processes and possibilities of post-secondary education, and prepare them for this exhilarating next step. To sign up, please view the 2009 College Fair Brochure at right, or contact David Moran at moranda@grovesacademy.org.

Finding the Fit for You – September 22, 2009

Choosing the right college is a big decision – perhaps, for a student with a learning disability, one with even more significant implications.  There are so many factors to consider (including size, location, cost, degrees and services offered, and many more) that it can be daunting to begin the process. The first of our college workshop series, Finding the Fit for You, will examine these factors so that participants will be better prepared for the College Fair held the following week. College counselors will provide their perspectives on the factors to consider, the questions to ask, and how to manage the decision-making process.  Support service specialists from local colleges will also be on hand to give insight into the scope and varying types of LD assistance that different colleges offer.

Understanding Yourself – October 6, 2009

Before students begin the college admissions process, it’s a good idea for them to have a full understanding of their unique strengths and challenges.  Learn about the different kinds of educational tests and assessments that help with self-awareness at this workshop. Find out what all theses scores, reports, and results measure and how they can be useful in finding the right-fit college, applying to college, and advocating for the appropriate accommodations during college.  Attendees may also wish to schedule a personal consultation with Ray Boyd, Director of Diagnostics, who would review students’ testing results, provide analysis of their learning profile, and make recommendations for types of accommodations in college.

Presenting Yourself – November 3, 2009

This workshop will address the ways in which LD students present themselves to their college or university of choice. Speakers and college admissions representatives will offer insight into what makes a compelling college application, and what LD students can do to emphasize their unique strengths and abilities. The college essay, which has become increasingly important, will be a focus of attention; attendees will learn about effective ways to write one, as well as sound styles and content within the essay itself. Two weeks later, on November 17, 2009, interested students will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with Groves faculty to discuss their own essay and get individualized feedback about how they can make it stronger.

Avoiding the Pitfalls of the First Year – April 13, 2010

Once you get to college, what should you do when you find yourself falling behind and your grades are dropping? There will be times throughout each school year when you feel anxious and overwhelmed with the amount of work you have to do for each of your classes, or don’t know how to study for your first test.

This workshop will help you prepare for times when you feel like you are sinking.  The time to get help is right away before it becomes too late to turn the situation around. There are professionals at every college who can help you with your individual learning situation overcome the downward slide.  Support Service representatives from several colleges will be here to discuss these situations and identify the people on their campuses who will be able to help when the feeling of being overwhelmed takes over.  These are normal situations that arise on every college campus every year.

Conference Fees

The workshop series fee is $80 for adults and $40 for students when all four workshops are registered for at once. The cost is $30 for adults and $15 for students for individual workshops. The fee for one-on-one college essay consultation is $25. Normal Groves fees apply for consultation with the Director of Diagnostics.
