The Lower School at Groves Academy enrolls students in grades 1 - 6.  Students have a homeroom teacher who teaches most of the academic curriculum.

The homeroom curriculum includes

* Wilson Reading (decoding and spelling)
* Writing (Language Circle supplemented with other materials)

* Literature (fluency and comprehension)

* Mathematics (SRA supplemented with other resources)

* Science and Social Studies (theme units)

* Social/communication skills

Lower School students also have elective classes in physical education, art, music, home science, technology and speech/language.

Throughout the day,

* Learning takes place in a structured setting with modifications and accomodations for individual learning styles.

* Instruction is presented in several modalities whenever possible, including auditory, visual, and/or tactile.

* Field trips and other experiences reinforce classroom instruction.

* Organization and study skills are emphasized throughout the academic program.
* The student/teacher relationship is key to each student's academic progress.  Small class sizes allow these relationships to grow and to be most productive. In this nurturing environment, children are helped to become more confident and more connected to their peers and teachers.
