The Lower School at the Groves Academy is for students in grades one through six. Students have a homeroom teacher who teaches most of the academic curriculum.

The homeroom curriculum includes

* Wilson Reading (decoding and spelling)

* Writing (Language Circle supplemented with other sources)

* Literature (reading fluency/comprehension)

* Math (SRA supplemented with other sources)

* Social Skills (Communication Lab and character education)

* Science and Social Studies (theme units)

Lower school students also have elective classes in Art, Computer, Physical Education and Speech and Language.

~ Learning takes place in a structured setting with modifications and accommodations for individual learning styles.

~ Whenever possible, instruction is presented in several modalities- auditory, visual and/or tactile.

~ Field trips and other experiences reinforce classroom instruction.

~ Organization and study skills are emphasized throughout the academic program.

The student/teacher relationship is a key to the student's academic progress. Small class sizes allow these relationships to grow and to be most productive. In this nurturing environment, children are helped to become more confident and more connected to their peers and teachers.
