A Letter From the Directors:
About five years ago we developed a survey for parents of Groves students who had transitioned, or graduated, from our high school program. The results of this survey suggested that while many Groves students were making a successful transition to the “real world,” a number of Groves alumni were having difficulty making a successful, independent transition to life after Groves. As one parent so aptly described life after Groves for her son, “It was like stepping off of a cliff without a parachute.”
Because we want our students to be both successful and independent after they leave Groves, we have spent considerable time over the past three years developing a post secondary program for Groves alumni (those who have graduated or transitioned from the high school). The program consists of three distinct components including: academic tutoring in specific college classes; an internship in the community; and participation in a business, custom furniture making. The Groves Post Secondary (GPS) Program is designed to help students make the successful transition to more independence by offering support in a variety of contexts.
Students may participate in any, or all, of the components. In addition, we will provide life coaching and will help students through the application process for college classes. During the past year, ten students attended classes at MCTC, HTC, Normandale, and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Four of these students are transitioning to complete independence next year, so we have openings for four more students for the 2010-11 school year. If you think your child might benefit or if you have a friend whose child might benefit, please give Josh Tierney a call (952.915.4245) or email him at tierneyj@grovesacademy.org. He’d be happy to talk with you about the program.
We are excited about this new program and hope you will help us spread the word. Please click here for a program brochure.

John Alexander Josh Tierney
